The image people have of technicians is often associated with dirty hands and long hours. Tough work, in other words, yet these professions are often undervalued. Consider this: have you ever imagined a life without technicians?
Why technicians are heroes
Have you ever imagined what your life would be like without technicians? Technicians play a heroic role in our daily lives.
In comics and movies, superheroes wear capes, have toned bodies and fly through the air with clenched fists. Their mission? Solve problems and, with some exaggeration, save society. Engineers do essentially the same thing, but dressed in overalls, with a protective helmet on their head and a toolbox as a weapon.
Heart of winter
Think of a cold winter day: you get back from work and are happy to be home – shivering or not. You step inside, turn on the lights and expect a warm room. But the light switches don’t work and lighting an electric fire isn’t an option either. There you are in the dark and cold, with the sudden realization that as humans we are hugely dependent on technology.
Every day and every second, technicians are on hand to check, maintain and repair the vast electrical grid as needed. Without them, there would be no light, power or heating.
Without (cooling) technicians, less comfort
Speaking of that heating, the reverse story is also true, of course. We also owe the luxury of not having to crawl at our desks bathed in sweat during hot summer days to technicians. And don’t forget that we go shopping every day and assume that everything is kept fresh and at the right temperature in (the refrigerated section of) the supermarket.
Moving with a horse and cart? I don't think so!
You’ve done the shopping and loaded the suitcase? Then you start the car for the return trip. Cars should be serviced every year or after say 15,000 km. Who does this? Right, technicians. It can be done differently, you say? Your (electric) bike also needs tinkering.
Do you use public transportation? Then you know that a half-hour delay of your train or bus due to a technical problem can easily turn into a couple of hours. Have you booked a trip to warmer places? You can forget about that, too. And admit it: we would rather not return to the times with horse and cart, because there are no technicians who can do these jobs.
Technology
The times when you were forced to ask passersby for directions, explain to your partner once again how to read a map or call your appointment through a phone booth to say you would be late are long gone. Engineers also play a big role in the field of communication technology, just think about keeping the whole network straight.

It is crystal clear: we live in a modernized world and can no longer imagine life without technology, mobility and electricity. Or in short, without technicians. Therefore, a heartfelt thank you to these heroes of our society.
